Developing School Readiness Skills OT Program

School Readiness: Is Your Child Ready for Kindergarten?

Starting school is one of the biggest transitions in a young child’s life — and their parents’ lives too. School readiness is about more than knowing letters and numbers. It’s about whether your child has the physical, social, sensory, and self-care skills to participate fully in a school day.

At The Bridge Effect in Northmead, we provide school readiness assessments and targeted OT programs for children approaching kindergarten across Western Sydney. Search volume for school readiness spikes October–January, so most families book in the months before the school year begins.

How We Support School Readiness

We start with a school readiness assessment — identifying your child’s current skill levels across fine motor, self-care, sensory regulation, and attention, not a guess.

Therapy is targeted and practical, usually 6–12 weekly sessions, with parent coaching so gains carry through to the classroom and home.

Frequently Asked Questions

In NSW, children start kindergarten in the year they turn 5, as long as they turn 5 by 31 July of that year. Children who turn 5 between 1 August and 31 December may start that year or defer to the following year. The school year begins in late January.

Signs include difficulty with pencil grip or scissors, not managing clothing or toileting independently, significant difficulty with transitions, becoming overwhelmed in group settings, and difficulty communicating needs to unfamiliar adults. None of these alone is cause for alarm, but several together suggest an OT assessment would help.

Yes. Many children come to us after struggling in their first weeks or term of school. An OT assessment identifies what’s making the school environment hard and builds a targeted support plan — often with faster impact because the goals are tied directly to the environment your child is in every day.

Most children benefit from 6–12 weekly sessions in the months before school, depending on the areas of need identified in the initial assessment — usually enough time to build key skills and give parents strategies to continue over the school holidays.

Yes. We support NDIS self-managed and plan-managed participants and can incorporate school readiness goals into an existing plan. If your child doesn’t have a plan yet and you think they might be eligible, contact us and we can point you in the right direction.
