Speech Sound Disorders & Articulation Therapy

Speech Sound Disorders & Articulation Therapy

Is your child’s speech difficult to understand — even for family members who know them well? A speech sound disorder may be the reason. It’s one of the most common reasons children are referred to us at The Bridge Effect in Northmead.

The good news is that speech sound disorders respond very well to targeted therapy. We see children of all ages across Western Sydney, with no referral needed.

How We Treat Speech Sound Disorders

We start by distinguishing an articulation disorder from a phonological disorder — the right treatment approach depends on getting this distinction correct.

From there, we select an evidence-based approach matched to your child’s exact error pattern — whether that’s traditional articulation drills, Cycles, Minimal Pairs, or PROMPT.

Frequently Asked Questions

Difficulty with the ‘r’ sound is one of the most common articulation errors we see. It’s one of the last sounds to be mastered — most children produce it correctly by around 6–7 years. If your child is younger, a wait-and-see approach is reasonable. If they’re older than 7 and still struggling, a speech assessment is recommended. ‘R’ is one of the more resistant sounds to self-correct without therapy.

An articulation disorder is about how sounds are physically produced — the mouth isn’t making the right movements for a specific sound. A phonological disorder is about the underlying sound system — the child’s brain isn’t organising sounds according to the rules of the language, which tends to affect more sounds and have a bigger impact on intelligibility. Treatment approaches differ for each, which is why a proper assessment matters.

By 4 years, unfamiliar adults should understand approximately 80% or more of what a child says. If your child is significantly below this, a speech sound assessment is worthwhile — it will determine whether errors are within the expected range for their age, or whether targeted therapy would help close the gap.

It depends on the number and type of sounds affected and the severity of the disorder. A single sound error may resolve in 3–6 months with regular practice; a moderate phonological disorder may need 6–18 months. From Home practice between sessions makes a real difference to the pace of progress.
