Speech Therapy for Social Communication Skills
Every neurodiverse child communicates. The question is never whether communication is possible — it’s how we can best support each child’s individual communication profile so they can connect and participate on their own terms.
We take a neurodiversity-affirming approach — not a deficit model that treats autism as something to fix. Our goal is always functional communication, in whatever way works best for your child.
We follow the child — starting with how they already communicate, whether gestures, vocalisations, scripts, pictures, a device, or words, and building from there.
We’re trained in Natural Language Acquisition for gestalt language processors, and we’re AAC-affirming — the evidence doesn’t support the fear that AAC reduces verbal speech.
Autism affects communication differently for every child. We provide speech therapy for autistic children experiencing:
It’s grounded in the view that autism is a natural variation in human neurology — not a deficit to be eliminated. We don’t set therapy goals aimed at making an autistic child appear more neurotypical. Instead, we focus on functional communication goals the child and family have identified as meaningful.
Gestalt language processing (GLP) is a way of acquiring language common in autistic children, where whole phrases or scripts are learned first and gradually broken down into smaller units over time. Echolalia is often a sign of GLP. Our speech pathologists are trained in Natural Language Acquisition (NLA), the evidence-based approach to supporting GLP.
