AAC — Communication Support for Non-Speaking Children
Every child has the right to communicate. For children who are non-speaking or minimally verbal, AAC gives them a way to do exactly that — it’s not a last resort, it’s a powerful tool.
We provide AAC assessment, system selection, and therapy for children who need support communicating beyond speech, across Western Sydney.
AAC assessment is a collaborative, family-centred process — we trial different systems with your child before making any recommendation.
We work with PODD, LAMP, Key Word Sign, PECS, and high-tech devices, matched to your child’s profile and your family’s capacity to implement.
AAC covers many tools and approaches. We provide assessment and therapy for:
AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. AAC includes everything from gestures and picture boards to speech-generating devices and communication apps.
No. This is the most common fear, and it isn’t supported by evidence. Decades of research show that AAC does not reduce the development of spoken language — for many children, it actively supports it. We’ve never seen a child’s verbal speech reduce as a result of using AAC.
PODD (Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display) is a communication system developed by Australian speech pathologist Gayle Porter. It’s a comprehensive book or display system organised to support all communication functions, not just requesting, across a range of contexts, and is one of the most widely used AAC systems for children with complex communication needs.
Yes. AAC devices and apps can be funded through the NDIS Assistive Technology budget, typically requiring a speech pathology assessment and report demonstrating the device’s functional necessity. We support NDIS self-managed and plan-managed participants and can produce the assessment and AT report required. From
